For the second year in a row Hamilton women were the first to cross the line for the community cup. The Hamilton team, Deb Tam(9), Emily Weigand(14), Emily Lanois(24), Daphne Faldi(26) and Susan Burr (27) proved to be too much for North Andover and Essex teams who took second and third respectively.

In the men’s race the Gloucester team of Peter Asaro (1), Andrew Ryan(5), Josh Ryan (12), Liam Anastasia-Murphy (17) and Jonny Conant (73) scored a total of 108 points. Second place North Andover scored 184 and third place Hamilton scored 191.

Team XC Challenge | Gabe’s Run 2009

20 teams entered our first annual team XC challenge which awards the top 3 team finishers in men’s, women’s and coed categories. Team Monkey Jars took first in the Men’s category with a whopping 15 points. Asaro formed Monkey Jars with friends, former high school harriers from all across the state. The team was loaded with talent, as they took 5 of the first 6 places in the race. Asaro(1), Gilmore(2), Patrick McAllister(4), Andrew Ryan(5), Kevin Gilmore(6), John Ryan(12), Liam Anastasia-Murphy(17), Brendan Powers(36).

Men’s 5K | Gabe’s Run 2009
Peter Asaro leads the field of 330 in the men’s 5K race, as runners endure the deluge.

A very wet field of 330 runners braved the November monsoon to compete in the second annual reunion run. The deluge was non-stop. Weather only a seasoned cross-country runner could love. Peter Asaro from Gloucester, MA finished the water-logged 5K trail race in 16:57, just ahead of fellow Team Monkey Jars mate Peter Gilmore from Hanson MA who finished in 16:55. Alex Hall from Hanover, NH wearing Dartmouth Green secured third place with his time of 17:16.

Women’s 5K | Gabe’s Run 2009
Victoria Bresnahan, Amy Ahearn, Stephanie Moroney finish 1-2-3 in the Women’s 5K race.

The rain couldn’t slow them down – nor wash the smiles from the faces of the 270 women who competed in our second annual 5K trail race. Victoria Bresnahan from Lincoln, MA cut through the driving rain to finish first in 20:42. Amy Ahearn from Washington, DC and Stephanie Moroney from Manchester MA, matched strides step-for-step as they raced towards the finish, both crossing the line tied for second in 21:07.

“Shoelace Kids” raise funds for Gabe’s Fund

You may have see them in town, or after football or soccer games. They seem to be everywhere. Teddy Libelo, Chris Baras and Josh Libelo have been selling Hot Pink Shoelaces to honor Gabe at an astonishing rate. These Miles River middle schoolers have taken on raising funds for Gabe’s Fund as a community service project. Carolyn Libelo, Chris and Teddy’s mom, relayed their busy schedule, “They will continue to be around town, the football game at Endicott College, Dunkin’ Donuts next Sunday after church, and the Thanksgiving football game.

Team XC Cup Challenge | Create a team to compete

This year we are going to add a new event to encourage runners to compete as teams for the 5K Race in addition to the individual and Community Cup competitions. Grab your team, your friends, old classmates, or the neighborhood Yahtzee Club and create a team. It’s easy, follow the directions on the registration page.

The Team Cup will be awarded to the team with the lowest scores in the Men, Women and Coed categories. Each runner is awarded points for their finish place (e.g. first place receives 1 point, second place receives 2 points and so on).

2009 Scholarship Recipients.

We are proud to announce the recipients of the 2009 Gabriel Pacione Memorial Scholarships. Emily Lanois and Nick Petrou were unanimous choices selected by the respective selection committees. Emily and Nick each received a $5000 scholarship from GabesFund to help offset the cost of college tuition. We would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who helped make these scholarships possible. It is these generous contributions and your participation in Gabe’s Run that make the scholarships possible.
